Anime Expo 2023 is currently in full swing, and attendees are being treated to a plethora of thrilling announcements from various studios. On July 4th, an exciting collaboration was revealed by Warner Bros Japan and WIT Studio.
They announced that they would be working together on an anime series centered around the infamous group of villains known as the Suicide Squad, originating from the DC movie and comics universe.
The anime series, titled “Suicide Squad Isekai,” aims to place Harley Quinn and Joker in prominent roles. During Anime Expo, a brief teaser trailer was showcased, exhibiting the two characters wreaking havoc in Gotham City before transitioning to a scene where Harley Quinn finds herself in a world inhabited by dragons and orcs.
The term “isekai,” which translates to “another world” in Japanese, strongly suggests that the series will transport these iconic villains to a fantasy realm. While no information has been disclosed regarding which other DC characters will make appearances in the anime, the trailer does offer a fleeting glimpse of Amanda Waller, the agency director who typically embodies a morally ambiguous role.
“Eri Osada,” renowned as the chief animation director of the immensely popular anime “Jujutsu Kaisen,” has been appointed as the director of Suicide Squad Isekai. Following the announcement, Osada expressed gratitude for obtaining “express permission from DC to have the characters use magic.” Additionally, she mentioned that the team decided against replicating any specific iteration of Joker, opting instead to create a completely unique interpretation.
As of now, a specific release date for Suicide Squad Isekai has not been determined. However, fans eagerly await the opportunity to witness these captivating villains embark on a new and extraordinary journey in the anime series.
