  • The Nun II and A Haunting in Venice are in a close battle for the top spot at the weekend box office.
  • A Haunting in Venice is a murder mystery sequel based on an Agatha Christie book, while The Nun II is a horror sequel in The Conjuring universe.
  • The current earnings show The Nun II with $14.7 million and A Haunting in Venice with $14.5 million, making the final results uncertain.

The Nun II and A Haunting in Venice are in a tight battle to win the weekend box office. A Haunting in Venice is a murder mystery story based on a classic Agatha Christie book. The movie happens to be a sequel to 2022’s Death on the Nile. The Nun II is also a sequel but strikes a very different audience, as it is a horror story revolving around the idea of haunted nuns. It serves as the ninth movie in The Conjuring‘s universe. The Nun II is entering its second weekend, while A Haunting in Venice premiered on September 15.

The two movies have been in fierce competition since the start of the weekend. According to a report by Variety, The Nun II earned $14.7 million, while A Haunting in Venice brought in $14.5 million. Equalizer 3 is in third place with $7.23 million. The final results will be revealed on Monday, but the Conjuring‘s newest iteration could very well lose its spot to the Agatha Christie adaptation.

Who Will Hold The Number One Spot?

Kenneth Branagh and Tina Fey as Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver in A Haunting in Venice

The tight race between Haunting and Nun II will likely remain close through the end of the weekend. In its third week, The Nun is likely to secure better numbers next week, as Haunting will likely suffer a fairly significant sophomore slump. Nun held strong through its second week, having declined by only 55 percent. Haunting entered theaters to the same numbers that Nun earned in week two, so it will likely not be able to hang on in its own second week. Nun will likely only fall off with the release of Saw X on September 29.

Unfortunately for Haunting, it was entirely unable to properly promote itself with its star actors, including Kenneth Branagh and Tina Fey. With the SAG-AFTRA strike continuing and preventing actors from doing any promotion at all, movies relying on star power do run the risk of stumbling at release. Horror tends to rely less on its stars, which has helped Nun stay strong in theaters.

There is still a chance that Haunting can succeed if it manages to ensure excellent word-of-mouth results. Given that The Nun II has a Tomatometer score of 49 percent at the time of writing, A Haunting in Venice‘s 79 percent score could very well bring in more audiences in the late weekend to save its numbers. Either way, the box office results for this weekend are sure to be close.
