With each passing day, the premise of Gareth Edwards’ upcoming film, The Creator, becomes more timely. In this sci-fi adventure, John David Washington takes on an army of artificial intelligence in a post-apocalyptic war. As society increasingly grapples with the implications of AI, this film arrives at the perfect moment to tap into the audience’s growing anxieties.

It generated significant buzz at Disney’s CinemaCon earlier this year and now has a new trailer released, offering fans a glimpse into a bleak future where man battles machine. The Creator is set to debut in theaters this September.

Washington stars as Joshua, an ex-special forces agent who finds himself dealing with the sudden disappearance of his wife, portrayed by Gemma Chan (known for her role in Crazy Rich Asians). Their separation takes place amidst a war between humans and AI. According to the official synopsis, Joshua is recruited to track down and eliminate the Creator, the elusive mastermind behind advanced AI technology.

The Creator has developed a mysterious weapon capable of ending both the war and humanity itself. As Joshua and his team fight for the survival of the human race, they must venture deep into enemy territory, only to discover that the doomsday weapon they’ve been pursuing is an AI in the form of a child.

Joining Washington and Chan in the cast of The Creator are Ken Watanabe and Sturgill Simpson, who replaced Benedict Wong and Danny McBride after the latter two dropped out of the film. Additionally, Allison Janney and Madeleine Yuna Voyles round out the ensemble. Behind the camera, Greig Fraser and Oren Soffer serve as the film’s cinematographers, with Fraser having previously collaborated with Edwards on Rogue One. Edwards co-wrote the script with Chris Weitz, known for his work on About a Boy. Kiri Hart, Arnon Milchan, and Jim Spencer are credited as producers, while Yariv Milchan, Natalie Lehman, and Michael Schaefer serve as executive producers alongside Nick Meyer and Zev Foreman.

It will face competition from PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, also opening on the same date. Fans can expect a visually striking film from Edwards, known for his cinematic prowess. The Creator will also have an IMAX release. While the film is distributed by 20th Century Studios, it may later become available for streaming on Hulu. However, as Hulu is set to merge with Disney+ by the end of the year, there is a possibility that The Creator could be a launch title for the new streaming service.
