Simu Liu recently provided an update on the development of Shang-Chi 2, shedding light on when he will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Shang-Chi, a new hero introduced in the MCU after the Infinity Saga, had his own successful film in Phase 4, titled “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
“Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its box office performance, the movie paved the way for more adventures for the character.
However, for nearly three years, there has been little progress on the sequel, leaving fans wondering about its status. Finally, Liu addressed the situation on Threads, explaining that he was initially told that Shang-Chi 2 would follow the Avengers, but Marvel Studios has continuously pushed back the project due to circumstances beyond his control. Nevertheless, Liu expressed optimism about sharing more concrete news in the near future. Marvel Studios has not commented on his statement yet.
While Shang-Chi 2 does not have a release date yet, there are a few confirmed details about the sequel. Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” will return to write and direct the sequel as part of his overall deal with Marvel Studios.
Additionally, Cretton is also attached to direct “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike may be impacting the progress of Shang-Chi 2. Given the already packed schedules of Phases 5 and 6, it might be more suitable for the sequel to be saved for Phase 7.
In April 2023, Liu expressed his desire to explore new facets of his character in Shang-Chi 2. He hopes that the sequel will delve into aspects of Shang-Chi’s character and the people in his life, such as Katy, Xu Xialing, and Ying Nan. Furthermore, it is likely that the history of the rings, now in Shang-Chi’s possession after his battle with Xu Wenwu, will be further explored.
Although there are various factors causing delays for Shang-Chi 2, fans can hope for more direct updates from Marvel Studios before the year concludes.
