Job Cuts at Pixar: According to Reuters, in late May, Pixar Animation Studio laid off 75 employees, marking the first significant job cuts at the studio in a decade. The staff reduction affected individuals across different roles within the studio.
Notable Departures: Among those who left the studio were two senior members, Angus MacLane and Galyn Susman. Angus MacLane, previously an animator on successful films such as Toy Story 4 and Coco, directed the 2022 film Lightyear, which failed to meet box office expectations.
Galyn Susman, a long-time employee, produced Lightyear and is best known for her pivotal role in saving Toy Story 2 from being lost. During the film’s production in 1998, a deletion command on the film’s assets nearly wiped out all progress, but Susman’s backup copy helped restore most of the lost work.
Future Plans:I n the coming years, Pixar’s focus will largely shift towards producing sequels, aiming to secure financial success. Fans can anticipate sequels for popular franchises like Toy Story, Zootopia, and Inside Out. Additionally, Disney Animation is actively developing a third installment for the immensely popular Frozen series.
While these sequels provide a reliable source of revenue, Pixar and Disney Animation are also committed to delivering original content. Pixar has announced the upcoming film Elio, and Disney Animation is set to release Wish, which combines elements of both original and franchise storytelling, in November.
