Ryan Murphy , the creator of Netflix’s hit Monster anthology series, is gearing up for the second season, which will delve into the psyche of two infamous killers.

Titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the new season will tell the story of the Menendez brothers, who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents.

In addition to the scripted series, Netflix will also release a documentary feature, featuring exclusive access to Lyle and Erik Menendez.

The Menendez brothers’ case shook the nation in 1989 when they were accused of fatally shooting their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home.

Although the brothers were not initially suspected of the murders, police began investigating their involvement in the months that followed.

Eventually, Erik confessed to his psychologist, Jerome Oziel, who shared the news with his mistress, Judalon Smyth. Smyth later became a key witness in the brothers’ trial.

During the trial, the brothers claimed that they had committed the murders in self-defense, after years of physical and emotional abuse from their parents, particularly their father.

The brothers were tried separately, and both juries deadlocked, resulting in a mistrial. They were later tried together and found guilty.

Erik and Lyle were sentenced to life without parole and are currently incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Southern California.

The first trial was broadcast on Court TV and captivated the nation, often credited with ushering in the modern fascination with true crime. However, cameras were not allowed in the courtroom for the second trial.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will follow the immensely popular first season of Murphy’s anthology series, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

The series became Netflix’s second most popular English-language TV show of all time, just behind Stranger Things 4, with over 1 billion hours viewed in the first 60 days on the platform.

In November, Netflix ordered two additional installments of the Monster franchise following the success of Dahmer. It’s unclear whether each season will focus on someone convicted of murder specifically, as Netflix has stated that each installment will “tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society.” The focus of the third season has not been revealed.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is expected to hit Netflix in 2024.
