Werewolf By Night first released in black-and-white on October 7, 2022, marking a new way of storytelling for the MCU as the standalone, hour-long story introduced viewers to a new corner of the franchise. Directed by Michael Giacchino, Werewolf By Night debuted Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donnelly as Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone, respectively, and also introduced the legendary Man-Thing in the MCU, teasing further monster-based projects in the franchise’s future.

Today, Disney announced that Werewolf By Night will premiere on Hulu on Sept. 15 ahead of a re-release in color on Disney+ on Oct. 20. Aside from being in color, no other changes to Werewolf By Night were indicated.

How Werewolf By Night Will Be Different In Color

Gael Garcia Bernal in the MCU's Werewolf By Night

Werewolf By Night was perhaps one of the MCU’s goriest and most graphic projects yet, but the fact that it was released in black-and-white dulled down some of the impact. A color re-release of Werewolf By Night may test the water for more graphic projects such as Deadpool 3, Blade and Daredevil: Born Again, which are expected to appeal to a more mature MCU audience. More details may be revealed as a result of the new color palette, including the complete design of the werewolf himself, the intricacies of Bloodstone Manor, and Giacchino’s beautiful cinematography, which will finally be able to be seen to its full extent.

Werewolf By Night’s original Halloween 2022 release marked a huge departure from the typical storytelling techniques of the MCU. No previous project had been produced in black-and-white, and Giacchino seemed to have complete creative control over the textures, score, and storyline of the project. It could be argued that re-releasing the Special Presentation in color could detract from some of these more unique aspects. That said, as one of Phase 4’s most highly rated projects, a color re-release could boost the popularity of Werewolf By Night, and potentially even create the opportunity for Marvel Studios to delve into the world of the MCU’s monsters more in the future.
