Damon Lindelof’s Exit from Star Wars Universe Was Not a Mutual Decision, Writer Confirms
Damon Lindelof , the co-creator of popular TV shows “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” has confirmed in a recent interview with Esquire that his exit from the Star Wars universe was not a mutual decision.
Lindelof had joined the Star Wars universe in 2022 to write a new movie with director Sharmeen Obaid – Chinoy , but the duo left the project in February.
In the Esquire interview, Lindelof revealed that he was more than just in talks to join the Star Wars universe, he had actually joined and was later asked to leave.
However, he wished the new team all the best and praised Obaid – Chinoy as an incredible director. Lindelof had brought on Justin Britt – Gibson to co-write the project with him before their departure.

The project was eventually taken over by Steven Knight, who is known for creating “Peaky Blinders.”
Obaid-Chinoy remained as director, and it was announced at Star Wars Celebration that their movie would be a sequel to 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” with Daisy Ridley’s Rey returning to the franchise.
Lindelof’s script for the movie was reportedly a “true labor of love,” but it is still unclear whether he had planned a Rey-centric movie for Obaid-Chinoy to direct. Rumors have suggested as much, but nothing has been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that the new Rey movie will follow her as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order well over a decade after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker.” The story will explore the state of the galaxy and the Jedi at this point in time.

There is no release date yet for the new Rey movie, but Lindelof has not ruled out a return to the Star Wars universe in the future. As he put it in the Esquire interview, “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again… or again again try, as Yoda would say.”
