The bats (and Guillermo) are back. Almost. In just a couple of months, FX’s beloved vampire mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows, will be gracing our screens once again.

The network recently announced that the highly anticipated Season 5 will premiere on Thursday, July 13, much to the excitement of fans everywhere. While most plot details about the upcoming season are being kept under wraps, the Season 4 finale left viewers with a tantalizing cliffhanger to ponder.

In Season 4, we saw the vampires and their faithful familiar, Guillermo (played by the talented Harvey Guillén), finally reuniting on Staten Island after being separated in the Season 3 finale. However, upon their return to the mansion, they were met with utter chaos and disarray.

Lamentably, they lacked the necessary funds to fix the deteriorating mansion, primarily due to their inability to access their bank account. As a result, each member of the vampire household embarked on their own individual endeavors.

With the death and subsequent rebirth of Colin Robinson (played by the brilliant Mark Proksch), Laszlo (portrayed by the hilarious Matt Berry) assumed an unexpectedly paternal role in raising the child. Nadja (masterfully portrayed by Natasia Demetriou) ventured into entrepreneurship and opened her own nightclub, albeit not without encountering a few obstacles along the way.

Meanwhile, Nandor (brought to life by the talented Kayvan Novak) and Guillermo embarked on quests for love, though not with each other. Nandor tied the knot, while Guillermo had a secret romantic interest.

As the season finale unfolded, most of the major storylines found some semblance of resolution, except for the drama brewing between Nandor and Guillermo. Colin finally matured again, reverting to his energy-sucking vampire self, which provided the group with the much-needed access to funds for the mansion repairs.

In an unintentional but somewhat intentional move, Nadja destroyed her nightclub in hopes of claiming insurance money, only to realize she had no insurance and burned a stash of cash she had hidden in the club.

Guillermo, after episodes of secretive behavior, finally introduced his boyfriend, Freddie, to the group. However, Nandor decided to grant his wife Marwa’s wish and transformed her into an exact copy of Freddie, sparking a profound rift between him and Guillermo.

Nevertheless, the most significant unresolved thread from Season 4 lies in Guillermo’s unrelenting pursuit to become a vampire, a desire that has burned within him since the beginning. Taking a momentous step forward, Guillermo armed himself with a bag of cash and sought out a vampire friend, requesting to be turned.

The outcome of this pivotal moment will remain a mystery until Season 5 unfolds. Given Guillermo’s Van Helsing bloodline and his innate ability to slay vampires, one can only imagine the internal conflict he may face once his deepest desire becomes a reality.

What We Do in the Shadows, created, executive produced, and written by the brilliant minds of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, has captured the hearts of viewers worldwide.

Alongside the talented cast mentioned, Kristen Schaal also graces the series with her comedic prowess. As fans eagerly await Season 5, it’s worth noting that the show has already been renewed for a sixth season, set to premiere in 2024.
